International trademarks

Many of our customers ask us, is it possible to purchase a single worldwide trademark to be employed across the globe? The simple answer is no – trademark rights are territorial and national marks cannot be relied upon outside of their jurisdiction. There are some systems that allow the protection of trademarks in multiple countries which makes extending protection easier. 

As an example, the Madrid Protocol system is a trademark registration process administered through the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). This system allows you to apply for multiple regional trademarks in one go so that a single application can be used to file for trademarks in over 90 countries. You can also add further countries to your registration at a later date. Other benefits include the swift and relatively cost-effective nature of the procedure. The added advantage of this system is that if a trademark is accepted without question by the national Trademark register it designates, then there is no need for us to involve local associates.
