Beware of Misleading Unsolicited Emails Regarding Trademark Renewal
Recently, we have been made aware of an increasing number of misleading emails being sent to trademark owners, including our valued clients. These emails typically claim that a trademark has expired and offer to rectify the situation for a fee. Often sent by companies unrelated to us, their intent is to alarm recipients into seeking their services under false pretenses.
The content of these emails is often unprofessional, and their sole aim is to acquire business through misinformation. For example, weโve observed instances where clients are misled into believing that Trademark Eagle has allowed their trademark to expire. Upon investigation, such claims were found to involve duplicate registrations arising from Brexit. In these cases, the original UK trademark remained valid, making the duplicate unnecessary.
Another tactic used by these organizations is to contact trademark owners with unsolicited and often inaccurate information about the enforcement or protection of their trademarks. This is designed to undermine your confidence in the management of your intellectual property (IP).
